The Beginning of the Academic Year 2019/2020

General Information

JU's Official Inauguration

Just like every year, the Rector of the Jagiellonian University is inviting every student to participate in the opening ceremony of the Academic Year. It starts with a Holy Mass in St. Anne's Collegiate Church, followed by the customary procession of professors in gowns, marching through Kraków to Auditorium Maximum where the main part of celebrations starts at 11 am. Please, keep in mind that in order to attend celebrations in Auditorium Maximum, you have to have an invitation, which you can collect in the Student's Council's office ( The number of invitations is limited. However, remember that the whole ceremony is in Polish and you can also watch it via Internet stream. Nevertheless, we encourage you to attend the procession of professors, which is happening only once a year. For more information please visit the link below:


Special Inaugural Lecture

Deans of the Faculty of International and Political Studies are pleased to invite you to an inaugural lecture of 2019/2020 academic year. The lecture entitled "Waking up to Smart Surveillance" by prof. David Lyon from Queen's University will take place on October 1st, 4:00 pm at the Assembly Hall of the Faculty of Law and Administration on Krupnicza 33a street. Prof. Lyon is a sociologist and jurist, the director of the Surveillance Studies Center, one of the best specialist in the field of surveillance studies in the world.

The event and the lecture itself will be in English.

Our deans and the director of TransAtlantic Studies strongly advise you to attend this one-of-a-kind opportunity to hear a lecture by this world-renowned specialist.

Keep in mind that if you haven't already paid the tuition for the winter semester or the whole academic year, the deadline for you is 7 days since the day of enrollment. Please, send a scan of transfer's confirmation to the TAS Office once you pay the tuition. If you have any questions concerning your payment, let me know.


Internal Inauguration of TransAtlantic Studies

Our newly appointed coordinator of TransAtlantic Studies program, dr Tomasz Soroka, along with our professors and the whole TAS team, would like to invite you to an internal inauguration of TransAtlantic Studies for the 1st year students, which will take place on October 2nd, 12:00 pm in room 6, Institute of American Studies and Polish Diaspora, Rynek Główny 34 -- appx. 15 minutes before the start of your first class with prof. Patrick Vaughan - World Politics in the 21st Century.

Just like in the case of the inaugural lecture, we strongly advise you to attend it since we're going to get to know each other, speak about the rules of our studies, some of the formalities, and studying in Kraków. We are also planning to organize an additional event with the representatives of the Institute's Students Society, but you will be informed about it in the near future.


Intro Days 2019

If you're arriving in Kraków this week, we highly recommend attending Intro Days, which is "a series of meetings introducing new foreign students starting their studies at the Jagiellonian University into university structures and various types of introductory events aimed at bringing closer the reality of everyday student life in Krakow."

Intro Days take place at the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics on JU's Campus ( on September 27th - 30th. The meetings are held in Polish, English, and Russian. The registration for those who want to attend the events is free, but obligatory and is conducted via this page -- if you want to attend the event, you have to register. There are also other meetings organized as a part of Intro Days, which take place throughout the City, e.g. visiting some of the museums or other cultural institutions. If you want to attend those, you have to register as well.


Elective Courses

We want to remind you that some of you still didn't choose the elective courses for the upcoming semester. If you want to do so, please send me an email. The list of TAS' elective courses was sent along with the timetable of the Winter Semester. Remember you have to do 5 courses from the P module and 3 courses from the K module to finish your studies (2 courses per semester). You were already registered to all obligatory courses, so you should see your timetable on your USOSweb page as well.


Polish Language Courses

There is an opportunity to attend commercial courses of Polish language at the Jagiellonian University provided by the School of Polish Language and Culture. There is a large variety of courses to choose from like Intensive one-semester program, summer programs, online courses or non-intensive one-year program among others. All those courses are commercial and there is an additional fee to pay if you want to register. Those classes, just like any other at the University, start at the beginning of October.
