Accommodation

Kraków - A Great Place to Stay!

Krakow is a wonderful place to study and housing is generally more affordable than in the United States or Western Europe. Student housing is generally inexpensive. A month's rent for a place to stay (a room or a whole apartment), including utility fees (electricity, gas, water, etc.) will generally come to anywhere between 600 PLN ($160 or 140 Euro) to 2500 PLN ($650 or 580 Euro). Please note that the tuition fee paid to the Jagiellonian University does not cover accommodation or board.

Dormitories

Dormitory space at Jagiellonian University tends to be quite limited for visiting students. Only shared rooms for 2 to 3 students are available at the Jagiellonian University's dormitories. The cost varies on a yearly basis, but is the monthly payment is usually appx. 400 PLN ($105 or 95 Euro).

We usually offer up to 5 places in dormitories for TransAtlantic Studies students. Generally, they can choose from three available dormitories as highlighted below.

  • Dom Studencki Nawojka, ul. Reymonta 11
  • Dom Studencki Żaczek, al. 3 Maja 5
  • Dom Studencki Piast, ul. Piastowska 47

If you want to apply for the accommodation at the Jagiellonian University dormitories, you should send the Housing Application Form to the TransAtlantic Studies Office at transatlantic@uj.edu.pl. Students reserve places in dormitories for a whole academic year - the period of stay starts at the beginning of October and ends in late June.

The reservation takes place on a first-come, first-served basis, so please send the form as soon as you decide you want to stay in a dormitory in the next academic year. Usually, the first-year students send their applications as soon as they are accepted into the program. The second-year students apply for a room near the end of the summer break (late August or early September).

Private Apartments

You might also want to rent a room or a private apartment, while you study at Jagiellonian University. Do not be intimidated by this process. Kraków is a city full of students and offers a large variety of options for private student housing. Keep in mind that private flats shared by a small number of students (usually from 2 to 5) are the most popular method of student housing in Krakow. Student rental agencies are most helpful in providing information about available housing. The private real estate agencies are also convenient, but you should be aware that this might entail some extra charges.

This may sound difficult but once you arrive in Kraków you will find that the process is not as difficult as it may seem. Thousands of foreign students are now living in our city and they find housing within a few days without problems. However, we do strongly advise that you try to find a place in advance or arrive in Kraków before the term starts to give yourself more time to secure a flat.

The TransAtlantic Studies office will also provide any help you might need in finding accommodation.
